Roadworks are expected to cause headaches for motorists travelling between Auckland and Northland this evening, with major delays expected.

State Highway 1 Dome Valley will be closed for four hours from 7pm this evening while critical work gets underway, New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said.

A stop/go lane closure will be in place while a 1km median wire rope damaged in a crash on Saturday morning is reinstalled.

"Due to the location and length of the strike, the entire barrier must be reinstated, along with the installation of new posts along the damaged section," NZTA said.

"Flexible median safety barriers were put in place along this stretch of road due to its poor safety record. This strike shows how important these safety interventions are at helping to prevent a head-on crash."

Meanwhile, SH1 Brynderwyn Hills is closed for nine weeks while critical earthmoving and reshaping work is completed.

The notorious section of SH1 — prone to slips and road closures — will have its bank on the eastern side of the highway cut into to provide space for crews and equipment to work safely clearing future slips.

There are three scenic detour options available, including through Cove Rd, which adds an extra 20 minutes to your journey; Paparoa to Oakleigh, a deviation to the west from Brynderwyn Hills via just south of Whangārei; and State Highways 12 and 14 through Dargaville and on to Whangārei.

The Paparoa to Oakleigh route was closed for several hours after a logging truck rolled on Paparoa Oakley Rd but has since reopened.

The Brynderwyns will reopen for six days from 11.59am on Wednesday, March 27 to 11.59pm on April 2 over the Easter period.

The road will close again from 12.01am on Wednesday, April 3 to 11.59 on Sunday, May 12 to complete the remaining work.

"NZTA thanks motorists in advance as we carry out this ongoing work."
