A Waiheke Island ferry was forced to turn around on Saturday night after a fight broke out between some passengers onboard.
The Fullers ferry departed Waiheke Island at 11pm but quickly returned back to Matiatia ferry terminal after a fight broke out on the boat.
“Unfortunately a group of passengers became aggressive onboard an outbound service from Waiheke, causing a delay to the 11pm sailing," a Fullers360 spokesperson said.
"The disruptive behaviour resulted in our crew returning the service to Matiatia ferry terminal for Police support, in line with standard operating procedures. The ferry was held at Matiatia while crew awaited police presence and support for the remainder of the sailing back to Auckland."
The passengers involved in the fight were removed by police before the ferry set sail again an hour and a half later with additional security onboard. All passengers disembarked safely on arrival.
"We apologise to our customers onboard who endured a delay, however safety is our number one priority and our crew took reasonable action, following safety operating procedures to ensure the safety of our crew and customers. Thanks to our crew for responding professionally, and to our customers for your patience,” the spokesperson said.
A police spokesperson said two people were arrested, one for disorder and one on existing warrants to arrest.
