Pro golfer's 'awkward' interaction with 'mansplainer' at driving range

February 24, 2024

A golfer was left looking at her phone camera in shock as a man tried to help her perfect her swing - without realising he was talking to a professional and coach.

Georgia Ball's TikTok, which she was filming to show her swing change - an act that many golfers do regularly to work on their technique - recorded the awkward gaffe, with the original video being viewed over 10 million times.

The video saw the certified PGA pro finishing a swing as an off-camera man started to offer his advice.

"You shouldn't be doing that," he says before offering further tips.

Ball told the man she was going through a swing change, but the unidentified helper continued advising her. "Follow through," the man said. "You're too slow on the way up."

The man added: "You know, I've been playing golf for 20 years."

Ball took the advice in her stride and lined up another shot with an onscreen caption reading: "I knew I had to make the next shot a good one."

She swung the ball and sent it flying off in the distance, which the man took credit for.

"See how much better that was?" he said.

Comments on Ball's TikTok expressed how awkward the interaction was, with one person commenting: "The whole point of that interaction was to let you know he played golf for 20 years". Another posted: "I've been driving for 25 years but I'm not about to give Lewis Hamilton some pointers."

Ball also commented: "This was a bit awkward, not going to lie".

However, she told BBC that the man was "right in what he said," even if the interaction was uncomfortable.

"I have a lot of interaction with males and females every single day," she said. "And I'd say it's mostly always positive."

She said the video going viral was "crazy" but in a good way and that the reactions had been "so positive."

"All the support, the comments, the messages, it's just been so good. And I'm just so grateful for everything that's come through."

She also said that since posting the video, she had seen the funny side of the situation.

"I'm just glad I can look back at it now and laugh about it because the majority of people and golfers are all just out to help each other."
