A United Airlines passenger has captured footage of his flight making an emergency stop in Denver after a chunk of the plane's wing slat appeared to have come off.

Passenger Kevin Clarke was one of 165 customers on board the Boeing 757-200 plane that departed from San Francisco International Airport bound for Boston on February 19.

Clarke shared video online of the plane after it landed at Denver International Airport and was inspected by workers on the tarmac.

United Airlines told 1News that flight 354 was diverted to Denver to "address an issue with the slat on the wing of the aircraft".

"The flight landed safely and we arranged for a different aircraft to take customers to their destination, which arrived in Boston later that night," a spokesperson confirmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told ABC News it would be investigating the reported incident.

In recent months Boeing has faced scrutiny over the operational safety of its aircraft after a door panel blew out on a flight over Oregon in January.

Following this incident, the FAA recommended airlines inspect the door plugs on certain Boeing 737s that are older than the Max 9 jetliner and said Boeing — under pressure from airlines to produce large numbers of planes — is not paying enough attention to safety.

And today the organisation announced that the head of its 737 programme, Ed Clark, is leaving the company after 18 years and will be replaced by Katie Ringgold.

Longtime executive Elizabeth Lund has been appointed by Boeing Co., to the new position of senior vice president for BCA Quality, where she will lead quality control and quality assurance efforts.
