The latest disruption to Auckland's train network that saw all trains halted this morning has prompted frustration from an Auckland Councillor — who said Kiwirail need to "up their game urgently".
KiwiRail general manager Metros Jon Knight told 1News that signals across Auckland "went down for about five minutes" shortly after 9am today, one week after the city's leaders blasted train bosses over delays and cancellations.
"All trains were stopped immediately. All trains were moving again by about 9.45, but the incident resulted in affected services being delayed, varying between 10 and 40 minutes," he said.
"We apologise to Auckland commuters for this disruption. We are investigating how this happened, to ensure it is not repeated".
North Shore councillor Richard Hills vented his frustration about the latest issue on social media, saying Kiwirail "must up their game urgently".
"I'm not an engineer but surely there's a better way to manage a track issue than closing down an entire network," he said in a response post to Auckland Transport on X.
"Govt only just invested $330m to finally upgrade track network but it feels less resilient than before."
Last week, transport officials said track speed restrictions were expected to continue on parts of Auckland's train network over the next several weeks and into March.
Issues over the city's trains came to a head on February 12 after the high temperature of tracks were blamed for the cancellation of dozens of services.
Several hundred train services usually operate every weekday in Auckland.
