Australian Bishop Christopher Saunders has been charged with rape and a string of other sex offences — some against children.
The charges follow a five-year investigation into the high-ranking former Bishop of Broome after allegations of sexual abuse were made by several men.
The ABC reports police from the WA Child Abuse squad took the 74-year-old into custody late on Wednesday afternoon.
The alleged charges dated back to 2008 across Broome, Kununurra, and Kalumburu.
Saunders — one of the most senior Catholics in Australia to face charges of this nature — was refused bail.
He was due to face 19 charges in court on Thursday.
