An unfortunate spelling mistake at a West Auckland bus stop has now been corrected after the typo was ridiculed by locals.
Business owners on Te Atatū Rd in Te Atatū Peninsula were left scratching their heads yesterday after spotting the road markings at a stop near the library read "bus sotp".
One called it "quite embarrassing". Another said it was "inconvenient".
Yesterday evening, contractors returned to the stop, quickly painting over the mistake.
It now correctly reads: Bus stop.
In a statement to 1News yesterday, Auckland Transport (AT) said the do-over would be at the contractor's expense "with no costs to AT".
The stop is part of AT's North-West bus improvements — pairing up with an existing stop across the road.
Its aim is to service both sides of the town centre and "provide another connection to the Western Express (WX1)".
Online, some locals seemed disappointed the gaffe was fixed.
"I kind of wanted it to stay the way it was," one said.
Another said: "Should have left it as it was — might have become a tourist spot!"
