Person dies in crash on 'Forgotten Highway' SH43

Police were alerted to a vehicle submerged in a waterway beside State Highway 43, in Tangarakau Gorge.

A person has died after police discovered the person in their vehicle submerged in a waterway beside State Highway 43 yesterday.

Police said they were alerted to the crash just before 9am on February 20 — finding a deceased person in a vehicle "submerged in a waterway" beside State Highway 43, in Tangarakau Gorge.

"The formal identification process is underway," police said.

The serious crash unit has completed a scene examination and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

The Forgotten World Highway, as it is commonly known, stretches 148km from Stratford in Taranaki to Taumarunui in the King Country and included the only unsealed portion of the New Zealand state highway network.
