One person has suffered burns after a large fire broke out in a factory building in Auckland's Onehunga this evening.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand assistant area commander Michael Manning confirmed 15 fire trucks and 100 firefighters were sent to the scene on Galway St in Onehunga.

He said the address was a workshop with "several vehicles inside", and the partial collapse of the building brought the roof down on cars, believed to be electric vehicles.

"Our crews are working on a fire at a factory in Onehunga, which broke out about 4.30pm," FENZ said in a post to social media.

Manning said fire communications would be sending out a mobile phone alert, and that residents downwind of the fire were advised to keep their windows shut.

"If you are in the area, please respect any traffic detours."

Manning said a fire investigator has been called to the scene as the cause was "undetermined".

Residents took to social media to share pictures of large, black plumes of smoke rising into the sky.

Fire crews pour water on the blaze in Auckland's Onehunga this evening.

A 1News reporter at the scene said the smoke had turned grey in colour and begun to dissipate shortly after 5pm.

They said the fire "appears to be out" with crews pouring water onto hotspots.

A 1News reporter said there is a "large presence" of fire crews dampening hotspots.

Police said emergency services received a report of a fire around 4.40pm on Galway Street.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays while emergency services respond. Diversions are in place".

Earlier this month, fire crews worked overnight to contain a separate fire at a large industrial rubbish facility, also in Onehunga.

The fire on Victoria Lane on February 7 forced the evacuation of neighbouring commercial properties.
