Over 600 MOE staff unable to return to work after building fire

FENZ crews were called to a fire in a substation basement of Wellington's Treasury Building yesterday afternoon.

Six hundred and sixty Ministry of Education staff are unable to go back to their offices after a fire broke out yesterday.

The building at number 1, The Terrace has been shut until further notice and employees advised to work from home.

FENZ crews were called to the fire in a substation basement of Wellington's Treasury Building at 4pm yesterday, closing the adjoining road for several hours while it was extinguished.

"We are working with the fire service and the landlord to regain access as soon as possible," Ministry of Education acting corporate leader Jan Breakwell said.

"In the meantime, we are providing regular updates to staff and making arrangements for those who normally work at 1 The Terrace to work from home if possible until we’re given the all clear," she said.

Parliamentary Service's chief executive Rafael Gonzalez-Montero told 1News that some of the Select Committee room bookings have also been shifted due to the fire.

"Staff from other precinct-based agencies who work on the ground floor of the building have been asked to work from home while the building is assessed by the landlord," Gonzalez-Montero said.
