NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll has shared his top tips on how to best plan for the possibility of bad weather on your wedding day.
Noll and his wife got married in February 2022 when Cyclone Dovi struck and for their anniversary in 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle hit.
Speaking to Breakfast, Noll said there are a number of things people can do to prepare for different weather outcomes on their big day, including choosing the right time of year to get married.
"The number one thing to look at is a bit of weather history about your location, if you're trying to avoid the wind maybe don't plan your wedding in Wellington for September, October.
"Or we might have a La Niña later this year, so if you wanted to get married in Fiordland say next summer, that could be quite nice."
He said there's lots of information online about this and you don't need to become a climatologist.
"Be aware if there's an indoor option or not, and always have a plan b. Try know about the probability of rain in the days leading up and understand that risk, make the call when the day comes.
"The venue may require a decision a couple days ahead, then get advice from a meteorologist."
