Four youths were taken into custody this morning after an alleged late-night joyride in a stolen car through the streets of South Auckland.

Just before 2am, the alleged stolen vehicle fled from police while travelling along Roscommon Place in Clendon.

Officers decided not to pursue the car, instead using the Eagle helicopter to track its movements.

Counties Manukau central area prevention manager Inspector Mark Chivers said the car was "allegedly travelling at high speed and at times was on the wrong side of the road around the Manukau area".

As the driver made their way into Manurewa, the car was spiked on Hill Rd and came to a stop.

"Four youths have got out of the vehicle and surrendered to police," Chivers said.

A 13-year-old is due to appear in the Manukau District Youth Court today, charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle and failing to stop.

Two 12-year-olds and a 17-year-old have been referred to Youth Aid services.
