A Wellington office building that houses staff from Treasury and other government departments was evacuated this afternoon after smoke was seen pouring from the ground floor.

A 1News reporter outside the building on The Terrace across the road from the Parliament precinct said "at least six fire engines are at the scene".

In an update just before 7pm, police said the road between Bowen Street and Aurora terrace had reopened and thanked motorists for their patience.

FENZ crews found fire in a substation basement of the Treasury building.

A Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesperson told 1News it was alerted to a fire in the Treasury Building at 4pm.

"Crews found fire in substation basement of building. There are no reports of injuries.

"The fire is not under control but not spreading," FENZ said.

A 1News reporter confirmed "at least 6 fire engines are at the scene".

Members of the public could be seen covering their faces in attempts to reduce breathing in the smoke coming from the building.
