A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving another motorcycle at Arthur's Pass this afternoon.
Police responded to the crash on the Waimakariri River bridge around 4.20pm on Sunday.
Another person is in a moderate condition.
"The road is currently closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area," said a spokesperson.
A 1News reporter at the scene said three helicopters, St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) personnel are present at the scene.
"Motorists have been told it’ll be an hour before the road reopens."
An NZTA spokesperson said that State Highway 73 is blocked due to a crash on the Waimakariki River bridge.
"Road users are advised to expect delays along this route."
St John and Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue have been contacted for comment.
