Black Caps fast bowler Kyle Jamieson is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering another injury setback.

Jamieson, 29, won't play cricket again "until at least next summer" after a new stress fracture was found in his back – in the same place as a previous injury – after the opening Test against South Africa, a statement from New Zealand Cricket said.

He's not expected to undergo surgery but months of rest and rehabilitation are set to give the injury the best chance to heal.

"The last few days have been some of my most challenging but I am hugely grateful for the support I've received from my partner, family, teammates, support staff and medical professionals," Jamieson said.

"I know injuries are part of life as a cricketer and at my age I am hopeful I still have many more playing days ahead of me."

The two-metre tall quick was out for months last year after an operation.

"We've all seen how much work Kyle has put into returning to international cricket and for him to have a setback like this is tough news to get," coach Gary Stead said, adding the players and staff feel "terrible" for Jamieson.

"On the positive side we know how determined he is to keep playing cricket for New Zealand and we will be fully behind him on the rehabilitation road ahead.

"His resolve is undiminished."

The team secured victory in the two-Test series over South Africa with a win in the second match yesterday.

The Black Caps are set to square off against Australia next, beginning with the first T20 on Wednesday.
