A man allegedly stole clothes from a shop at an Auckland mall in a failed attempt to disguise himself from police.

The man, who had a number of warrants to arrest over burglaries, failed to stop his vehicle when requested by officers on Mt Wellington Highway yesterday, police said.

He was then watched by the police helicopter as he allegedly drove "in a concerning manner" —crossing onto the wrong side of the road and overtaking dangerously, Inspector Jim Wilson said.

“It is incredibly lucky no one was seriously injured during this incident,” Wilson said.

The man then drove into Sylvia Park Mall carpark before he dashed into a store and allegedly stole some clothes "to attempt to change his appearance".

“Unfortunately for him, police were waiting outside, where he was taken into custody without further incident,” Wilson said.

Wilson said mall security played a crucial role in monitoring the man, 41, who will appear in court today on multiple charges relating to shoplifting, failing to stop, and traffic offending.
