A road closure from Dunedin's Tomahawk and Centre Roads to the Southdale and Tomahawk Roads intersection is in place after sea lion pups have been spotted playing in the area at night.
Dunedin City Council said the closure was put in place as the wellbeing and safety of sea lions is important.
"We want to ensure these flippered pups are safe from harm," they said in a Facebook post.
After consultation with the Department of Conservation, DCC decided to close the roads down to Smails Beach until the sea lions have "moved on" from the area.
"This closure will extend from the Tomahawk and Centre Roads intersection to the Southdale and Tomahawk Roads intersection. The road will only be open to residents.
"DCC and DOC will continue to monitor the movement and behaviour of sea lions to ensure we are keeping all beach goers and road users safe."
