Police are appealing for help finding a wanted man with distinctive face tattoos in the Wellington region.

Edward Smith is believed to be "actively offending", a police spokesperson said.

Among his tattoos are a large "MOBBDEEP" print on his forehead and Mongrel Mob gang tattoos on his cheeks.

Police have a warrant for Smith's arrest after he failed to appear in court.

"Smith is believed to be in the Wellington district," police said. "Police want to locate Smith as they believe he is actively offending."

Anyone with information or who sees Smith is urged to call 111.
