More than 7000 people have reported feeling a 4.7 magnitude earthquake near Levin this afternoon.
According to GeoNet, the light earthquake occurred at 3:39pm, 45km north-west of Levin and was 70km deep.
GeoNet's Felt Report Summary indicated nine people noted the quake as "extreme", while 2991 said it was "light" and the majority considered it "weak" (3978).
Wellington Region Emergency Management Office posted to X, formerly Twitter, to remind residents "we live on shakey isles!"
Some residents posted to Facebook that they felt two "short, sharp jolts" shortly after 3:30pm today.
"Thought I felt it, my windows were rattling, I'm not going mad after all," one commented.
Another said: "Felt like two quakes. North west of Levin".
