More than a dozen earthquakes have shaken parts of southern California overnight, with 13 striking within 25 minutes whilst emergency alerts were sent out to phones.

The series of quakes began at around 12.30am California time (9.30pm NZ time), with the strongest measuring magnitude 4.8, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

They occurred close to the small city of El Centro near the US-Mexico border. The city has a population of around 40,000, however, the quake was also felt further away.

The US National Weather Service's San Diego office posted about the shaking on Twitter.

"It has been a busy night to our east. Several small earthquakes have occurred in El Centro in the past 15 minutes. A couple of them were felt at our office," they wrote.

"As of 12.53am, there have been 13!"

The strongest of the quakes would have caused moderate shaking near the epicentre, according to authorities.

No damage or injuries have been reported as a result of the quakes.

Meanwhile, emergency mobile alerts were sent out due to one of the quakes being estimated at above magnitude 5.0.

"The Shake Alert system estimated the quake above magnitude 5.0 so alerts were delivered to cell phones by USGS partners," the USGS wrote on Twitter.
