Fire crews are working to extinguish a scrub fire within the school grounds at Porirua College this afternoon.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson told 1News there were "no injuries or threats to structures".

Nearby major transit route Transmission Gully was to "remain open at this stage", FENZ said.

A scrub fire has broken out on Porirua College grounds.

In an update just before 5pm, FENZ said 12 ground crews and two helicopters have been sent to the scrub fire that was estimated to cover three hectares.

"About 70 firefighters [are] at the scene now," along with two water tankers," FENZ said.

FENZ confirmed it was first called to the fire at 2.30pm and it was "not yet considered under control".

The college at Cannons Creek had an enrolment of about 600 students in 2022.

10 fire trucks and a helicopter have been sent to the scrub fire.
