A Kawerau school's playground has sustained "significant damage" after an alleged arson attack in the early hours of this morning.
Police said it was notified of the blaze at Kawerau South School on Onslow Street at around 12.10am.
It said the fire had caused "significant damage" to a portion of the playground.
A Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) shift manager told 1News that two fire vehicles attended the blaze.
Upon arrival, the plastic playground was already a "well involved" 10m by 20m fire.
The fire was contained by 12.45am, and a fire investigator is at the scene this morning to establish the cause.
Authorities are currently trying to locate CCTV footage and "ask anyone with information or who witnessed any person or people acting suspiciously in the area to contact Police".
Those with information are being asked to call 105.
