The Wellington Phoenix women’s team is set to host pride celebrations in their final game of the season at Porirua Park on March 30.
The Phoenix announced yesterday that the team would be wearing a pride-inspired playing shirt, which will be auctioned after the match, with the money raised going to a local LGBTIQ+ charity.
The Wellington club said the match against the Western Sydney Wanderers will celebrate diversity and inclusivity in football.
The Phoenix are not strangers to creating one-off match shirts as they auctioned off a purple playing strip to raise money for the ‘I Am Hope’ charity in 2020.
The A-Leagues became the first football competition in the world to hold both men’s and women’s Pride Celebrations last year.
The A-Leagues is hosting its pride celebrations in early March, with the showpiece event being the annual Pride Cup double-header between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.
“The Pride Celebration is another example of how welcoming and inclusive football is as a sport for everyone in Australia and New Zealand,” A-Leagues commissioner Nick Garcia said.
“We began this journey with the Pride Cup and the PFA in 2021 and are looking forward to continuing what is an extremely important initiative within our game.
“The Pride Celebration is grounded in education and training with the ambition of seeing every person involved within our game in Australia and New Zealand feeling safe and included.”
