A man armed with an axe and a knife has been shot dead on a train in Switzerland after taking 15 people hostage.

According to the BBC, the man believed to be a 32-year-old asylum seeker from Iran, boarded a train near Yverdon.

The man forced the driver to stop the train and join the passengers in the carriage.

Passengers alerted local police, who spent hours trying to talk with the man both in English and Farsi, without success.

According to local media, more than 60 officers were in attendance, including a special unit from Geneva.

They noticed the man move away from the hostages when police stormed the train using stun grenades.

According to police reports, the man attacked the police, at which point they fatally shot the man.

Police say the man's motive was unclear, with one hostage saying the man appeared "very stressed".

Local reports say the hostages and their families are being supported by the Swiss health service's psychological department.
