Kirwee firefighters expect blaze to be extinguished, land returned

February 9, 2024

Firefighters expect to have the fire near Kirwee extinguished this afternoon, with an expectation that the land will be handed back to the landowners, according to Fire and Emergency.

Incident Commander Brian Keown said firefighters have continued to work hard for the last two days in Canterbury's Selwyn District extinguishing deep rooted hot spots through the area.

"Yesterday we had 35 firefighters plus support staff, diggers and tankers on site... Today we have scaled that back to 17 firefighters, and we expect to have this fire out this afternoon," he said.

"Everyone at Fire and Emergency Canterbury would like to thank the public and the impacted community of Courtenay for their support and patience while we have been dealing with this fire."

Temporary speed restrictions in the area would be removed after FENZ vacated the area.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The blaze occurred on Old West Coast Rd close to the Waimakariri River and emergency services were called shortly before 10pm on Sunday night.

On Monday, an aerial inspection confirmed no buildings were damaged and nor were any livestock caught up in the fire, which burned 80 hectares of pine plantation, scrub and some farmland beside the Waimakariri River.

At the time, residents from 10 houses were evacuated as a precaution, with other houses self-evacuating also.

Prohibited fire season still in place

The district remained in a prohibited fire season, meaning no open air fires were allowed, and a ban on fireworks and sky lanterns was added today.

"We ask people not to carry out any activities that might cause a spark and ignition, for example, mowing, using machinery, welding or driving through long grass," Keown said.

"For those in at-risk areas make sure you have an escape plan.

"If anyone sees smoke or fire, please ring 111 immediately."
