One person has died in an early morning house fire in the west Auckland suburb of Henderson, police have confirmed.
Police were called to assist firefighters at the property on Rathgar Rd at around 12.39am.
"One person was found deceased at the scene," a police statement said.
"The death is being treated as unexplained."
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said the fire was "well involved" when crews arrived at the scene. In all, four appliances attended.
"The fire has since been extinguished."
A scene guard is in place while police and FENZ carry out a scene examination.
"We hope to be in the position to recover the person's body from the scene later today," police said in an update this afternoon.
"Formal identification procedures are yet to be completed and will be carried out at a later stage.
"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the person's whānau after what has occurred overnight."
The death will be referred to the coroner.
