New Zealand struck early against South Africa with two wickets on the fourth day of the first Test in Mount Maunganui after setting the tourists the daunting total of 529 for an unlikely victory.
Declaring overnight on 179-4 after they bowled the Proteas out for 162 yesterday, the Black Caps had their opponents in big trouble early - both openers Neil Brand and Edward Moore out for 3 and 0 respectively.
Skipper Brand was the first to go when he was clean bowled by a swinging delivery from Tim Southee, the left hander initially hoping to leave the ball and clamping down too late.
Earlier, Brand survived a caught behind after a successful review found he didn't hit the ball, but, in a twist, the replay showed that the ball would have gone on to hit his off stump. However, he remained at the crease because it was deemed that the appeal was for a catch rather than LBW.
He was out next over.
Moore was next to go when hitting Matt Henry straight to Devon Conway at extra cover.
South Africa were 5-2 at that point and New Zealand may have been hoping to clinch their biggest ever Test victory; their current best margin is by 423 runs which was achieved against Sri Lanka in Christchurch in 2018.
However, Raynard van Tonder and Zubayr Hamza have dug in with a partnership of 57, South Africa's best of the Test, to take their side to 62-2 at lunch. As it stands, South Africa require a further 467 runs for the win.
Van Tonder is unbeaten on 26 and Hamza on 31, the pair offering some resistance at last at Bay Oval.
New Zealand skipper Southee shuffled his bowlers around. He and Matt Henry were quickly back in rhythm, with fellow seamer Kyle Jamieson also accurate.
Left arm spinner Mitchell Santner troubled both van Tonder and Hamza with his turn and bounce, with Glenn Phillips also getting a go with his right arm off spin.
