Two French nationals will be charged after one was captured scaling the side of a Melbourne skyscraper without any safety gear.

Emergency crews were alerted to a man scaling the side of the 55-storey Avani building on A'Beckett Street in the Melbourne CBD about 7.30am (local time) on Tuesday.

The French climber can be seen on videos posted to social media grasping onto a white pole alongside the building's facade as he ascends towards the top wearing a black backpack.

Police met the 29-year-old man from Newry once he got to the top of the building about 8.20am before escorting him down and arresting him.

He is expected to be charged with reckless conduct endangering life and serious injury, public nuisance and unlawfully entering private property.

A second French man who filmed the incident on a drone was arrested at Box Hill in Melbourne's east about 10.45am.

The 25-year-old is expected to face the same four charges.

No one was injured and both men will appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
