The diagnosis announcement read: "During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.
"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.
"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.
"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
Prince Harry has spoken with the King and will travel to the UK to see him soon, a source close to Harry told the Press Association.
“The duke did speak with his father about his diagnosis. He will be traveling to UK to see His Majesty in the coming days,” the source said.
The 75-year-old monarch, who ascended the throne 16 months ago, was previously admitted to the London Clinic for treatment of an enlarged prostate, which Buckingham Palace said was benign.
He had been experienced undisclosed symptoms.
His hospital admission came at the same time as the Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery.
UK political leaders sent messages of support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”
In a post to social media, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon urged the king to be strong and for "a speedy recovery".
Labour leader Chris Hipkins said: “I’m sure the thoughts of New Zealanders will be with King Charles. We all wish him the very best for the road ahead.
"Many, many New Zealanders will know someone whose life has been affected by cancer and I’m sure we all wish him well.”
