This week could bring some of the hottest weather of the summer as a warm air mass from Australia crosses the Tasman.
Some regions are expected to reach 30C on Waitangi Day tomorrow, meaning a trip to the beach might be a worthwhile way to spend your public holiday.
Speaking to Breakfast this morning, NIWA meteorologist Chris Brandolino said: “It could be the highest temperatures of the summer for a good chunk of the country — but not everywhere.”
He said that as the warm winds from Australia arrive in the South Island today, parts of Southland and Otago will experience “gusty wind and unsettled weather”.
The east of the South Island from Dunedin all the way to Nelson will bask in hot temperatures today, with Cantabrians warned it’s going to be another scorcher.
Brandolino expects the heat to hit a degree on either side of 35C for Canterbury.
He said that tomorrow, Waitangi Day, is “likely to be the hottest day of the week” and parts of the South can expect “temperatures in the mid and maybe upper thirties”.
These could range between 34C, 26C and 37C degrees.
At Waitangi itself, MetService predicts a high of 26C. For the rest of the North Island, temperatures are likely to be in the mid-to-high 20s, with Gisborne and Hastings possibly hitting 30C.
Later in the week, that heat will move north, with the rest of the country likely to see a lot of sun.
For the next 10 days, Brandolino said there won’t be a lot of rain, which has been brought on by El Niño.
“Our expectation, because El Niño is really driving things – more of a proper impact than we were seeing before.
“We’ll probably see dryness as a theme probably into Autumn."
