A police car has been rammed in broad daylight in Auckland's city centre this afternoon, shocking pedestrians and shoppers nearby.

Police said officers were called to reports of "erratic" driving shortly before 2.30pm.

In a video sent to 1News, the black car can be seen reversing into a police car, with officers emerging from the vehicle shortly after.

The video was shot at the bottom of Queen Street, one of the busiest streets of the city centre, near the Britomart train station and Commercial Bay shopping mall.

"Police received a number of calls of a male driving erratically in the downtown Auckland area. Fortunately, no people were injured," a police spokepserson said.

"Attending staff located the car on Customs Street East, where the offending driver has [allegedly] rammed the front of a police car before taking off towards Fort Lane.

"The police officers in the vehicle were not injured. He has stopped the vehicle there which has allowed police in the rammed vehicle time to catch up with him on foot and take him into custody. He is expected to face driving-related charges."
