Tony Brown set to coach Springboks - reports

Former Highlanders coach Tony Brown.

Tony Brown, the former All Blacks first-five and Highlanders coach, could be about to join the Springboks coaching staff.

According to media reports in South Africa, Brown is set to be named as attack coach under head coach Rassie Erasmus this week.

Brown, 49, has been working alongside Jamie Joseph with the Japan national team, but with Joseph returning to Dunedin to take up a director of rugby role with the Highlanders, and Eddie Jones taking over at the Brave Blossoms, Brown is a free agent.

It means Brown could be set to coach against All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson this year – Robertson attempted to recruit Brown in 2019 – with countryman Joe Schmidt, the new head coach of the Wallabies, also in the opposition camp.

The controversial Erasmus has been reappointed as head coach of the world champion Boks after Jacques Nienaber’s move to Leinster following the World Cup.

The Boks play the All Blacks twice this year – both Tests are in South Africa.

Brown helped lead the Highlanders to the 2015 Super Rugby championship and has become known as a creative leader at the top level.
