A person has died following an e-scooter crash in Auckland's Eden Terrace last night.

Police said they were called to the scene on on Ian McKinnon Drive around 11.30pm.

"The person was located in a critical condition, and CPR was commenced,. However, they were pronounced dead a short time later."

The Serious Crash Unit was in attendance and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

In November last year, RNZ reported there had been 10,000 e-scooter injury claims to ACC between 2018 and 2022 — worth an estimated $30m. This number spiked at 3100 in 2019, then fell back to 2500 last year — with the cost per claim dropping steadily.

A Waka Kotahi report estimated that e-scooter riders had the second highest rate of death or injuries in motor vehicle crashes per million hours spent travelling.

Last month, former National Party leader Simon Bridges was admitted to hospital with a broken wrist after falling off an e-scooter in Auckland.
