Woman dies in custody at Wellington police station

A woman has died after being found unresponsive in the cells at a Wellington police station early this morning.

The woman was in police custody when she was found unresponsive at Wellington Central Police Station around 2.40am, a police spokesperson told 1News.

"Despite medical attention, she was unable to be revived."

She had been taken into custody late Saturday "on outstanding warrants for arrest", the spokesperson said.

An investigation will be carried out.

"Those findings will help inform the Coroner."
