Environmental protesters have thrown soup at the Mona Lisa today.

The world-famous 16th century painting by Leonardo da Vinci is held at the Louvre in central Paris, France.

A video of the stunt posted online by protest group Riposte Alimentaire (Food Counterattack) shows two women throwing pumpkin soup on the masterpiece to gasps of horror by onlookers.

The Riposte Alimentaire protesters were calling for the right to "healthy and sustainable food" to be integrated into the country's social security system.

"What is more important? Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food?" the pair said in French as they stood in front of the soup-covered artwork.

"Your agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work."

Museum staff can then be seen covering the art with black screens before the room is evacuated.

Two people were arrested following the incident, local police said.

A spokesperson for the Louvre said the artwork was behind protective glass and was not damaged by the soup.
