A man has been arrested by police after a security guard was stabbed at an Auckland New World this afternoon as they tried to stop a suspected shoplifter from leaving the store.
Police told 1News officers were called to the supermarket on May Road, Mt Roskill at 3.40pm after a security guard was stabbed in the arm.
"The incident occurred after the guard attempted to stop a suspected shoplifter leaving the store," police said.
"The alleged offender then ran away, reportedly heading north on May Road. Inquiries are ongoing to locate him."
"The security guard was treated by ambulance staff at the scene."
In an update this evening police said a 25-year-old man was arrested over the stabbing and has been charged with wounding with intent to injure.
He will appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.
Foodstuffs, who owns the New World supermarket chain, gave a statement to 1News on the stabbing.
"This afternoon a member of the security team at New World Mt Roskill happened to recognise a person in the store as a known offender who has previously been trespassed for aggravated assault at the nearby PAK’nSAVE Mt Albert.
"While escorting this person from the store, the offender used a concealed weapon to violently attack our security guard, stabbing him in the arm. The offender then fled from the store and our store team called the emergency services.
"The police and ambulance were quick to attend with our security guard being taken to hospital where he is currently being treated for a deep stab wound which is considered to be serious but not life threatening."
Foodstuffs added it's constantly looking at ways to combat crime within its stores and will be offering full support to the stabbed security guard.
It comes as earlier this month a person was taken to hospital with “serious injuries” after an alleged stabbing at a McDonald's in the same Mt Roskill shopping complex.
That assault happened around 8pm on Thursday January 11.
