A 5.2 magnitude earthquake centred just west of Pōrangahau shook the lower North Island this morning, with a series of aftershocks following and thousands saying they felt the initial quake.
The 3.18am earthquake was about 10km deep, GeoNet said.
"An early shake for the Lower North Island today," the organisation wrote on X.
Over 5000 people have reported feeling the quake so far.
Multiple "felt reports" were registered as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch.
At least five aftershocks have since shaken the region.
"Remember in an earthquake: Drop, Cover and Hold," GeoNet said.
"When in bed, cover your head. You are less likely to be injured if you stay in bed."
