Renowned artist Selwyn Muru, also know as Herewini Murupaenga, has died aged 86.
As well as being an artist, he has had a varied career as a teacher, actor, writer, musician and broadcaster, among other things.
A strong advocate for Māori, his work across the field centred around storytelling, tribal histories and social justice.
In 1990 he was the recipient of Te Waka Toi's (Creative NZ) Te Tohu Aroha mō Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangaikaahu Award for his contributions to Māori visual art, broadcasting, journalism, and whai kōrero.
He also helped write and advise on the Māori elements in Jane Campion's award-winning film The Piano, and Aucklanders will be familiar with his piece Waharoa, a sculptured gateway at the entranceway to Aotea Square on Queen St.
His most recent exhibition, titled Selwyn Muru: A Life's Work, was held early last year and showcased many of his artworks never seen publicly before.
