Doubtful Sound in Fiordland.

A cruise ship carrying nearly 70 people ran aground in Fiordland's Doubtful Sound last night, ending the planned overnight trip early.

The Fiordland Navigator ran aground near Crooked Arm at about 6.15pm yesterday.

RealNZ's acting CEO Paul Norris said in a statement: "The captain notified the company and a mayday call was made, notifying emergency response organisations.

"There were 57 guests and 10 crew on board. A minor injury was checked by medical staff, and all guests are returning to Te Anau safe and well. Our focus is on supporting our guests and crew at this time."

According to the RealNZ website, the Fiordland Navigator sleeps 72.

A doctor was flown in to check on the passengers after the grounding, Norris added.

And engineers are checking the boat for damage.

"There will not be an overnight cruise tonight," Norris said. "It's uncertain at this time how services will be affected."
