A 52-year-old man who made alleged “concerning comments” that sparked an armed police response in Auckland’s Albert Park yesterday has today been charged with making a false statement.

The park and several nearby businesses were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon. Streets surrounding the park were also cordoned off. Public transport in the area was affected.

Cordons were lifted when police took the man, who was wanted by police, into custody.

He appeared in Auckland District Court via video link on Thursday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on February 16.

Auckland City Central Area Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff thanked the public for their patience.

He said the evacuations occurred and cordons were put in place "so we could ensure the safety of all".

Police had advised the public to "stay away" while the incident was unfolding.

The University of Auckland on social media also told students and staff to stay away.
