Further details about a Hamilton father who was tragically killed have been released, a French mother has been sentenced for abandoning her young son, and Saudi Arabia has opened a liquor store for the first time in 70 years.

1 Police piecing together 'tragic, violent' death of Hamilton dad

Police say they are piecing together the "tragic, violent" death of a Hamilton dad.

The body of John Isaac, 53, was discovered by members of the public in the river near Ngāruawāhia, with a homicide investigation being launched following a post mortem.

Today Inspector Darrell Harpur said Isaac, 53, was the victim of a violent attack on the afternoon of January 18, before his body was found in the river by a person passing by in a boat around 6.30pm.

"Mr Isaac's movements leading up to his death are still being pieced together, and we would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or interacted with him in the days prior to last Thursday."

2 French mum sentenced after leaving child to live alone for two years

A French mother was sentenced to 18 months in prison last week for abandoning her 9-year-old child, leaving him to live alone in the family's council flat for two years.

BFMTV reported the boy had appeared to survive on cake, canned goods, and tomatoes stolen from a neighbouring balcony.

He lived in the town of Nersac, with the child's mother living with her partner in another apartment 5km away and only visiting the child from "time to time".

3 Seymour says Luxon being 'open' over Treaty Principles Bill

ACT Leader David Seymour doesn't believe the public is being misled over coalition support for his Treaty Principles Bill and said that "all bets are off" once it hits select committee stage.

At Rātana, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the Government had "no plans to revise the Treaty of Waitangi" or Treaty settlements.

A liquor store has opened in Saudi Arabia for the first time in over 70 years, a diplomat reported to the Associated Press, a further socially liberalising step in the once-ultraconservative kingdom that is home to the holiest sites in Islam.
