Police are appealing for any sightings of a man who was found dead in the Waikato River last Thursday or anyone who noticed anything "unusual" to come forward.
The body of John Isaac, 53, was discovered by members of the public in the river near Ngāruawāhia, with a homicide investigation being launched following a post mortem.
Police said it had been an "incredibly distressing time" for Isaac's whānau.
While unable to elaborate on the cause of death, police are piecing together the victim's movements in the days and hours before his death, and want to speak with anyone who may have seen or interacted with Isaac during that time.
"Mr Isaac is believed to have been travelling around the Hamilton area where he resides and was last seen wearing black cargo pants and a green pattern camouflage t-shirt," Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said.
"The Investigation team would also like to hear from anyone who saw any unusual activity near the Waikato River at any of the bridges between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia on the afternoon of Thursday January 18.
"Anyone who was out on the river or its pathways and banks and may have been recording recreational activities or taken photos or video on their phones is asked to please contact the inquiry team."
