Phoenix seeking 'idiot' troublemaker fans, may seek bans

Wellington Phoenix fans clashed with Melbourne Victory supporters at Friday night's 1-1 draw.

The Wellington Phoenix are looking into the actions of some supporters after they allegedly entered the Melbourne Victory supporters bay and disrupted oppositions fans.

The Phoenix said they allegedly threw cans at the opposition fans which resulted in things becoming physical between the opposing groups of spectators in the dying stages of Friday night's top of the table clash.

Phoenix general manager David Dome said on Wednesday that he wants to find the five or six people involved in the incident and if any charges are proven, they could be banned from attending A-League matches

Dome stated they are currently working with police to find those involved and also wants to apologise to the Victory supporters that attended the match.

“It was unquestionably one of the most dramatic games of the season and the atmosphere created by our fans was incredible, so it is very disappointing to have a small group of idiots engage in behaviour that no one else in the crowd wanted,” he said.

The Phoenix scored a late equaliser through an Alex Rufer penalty in injury time to stay top of the A-League ladder for another week as they are level on points with Victory but remain ahead on matches won.

“Victory and Nix supporters were mixing freely after the game so we know this was an isolated incident and not representative of our fans.”
