A person taken into custody after a number of police descended on Auckland's Albert park this afternoon was "wanted to arrest", police say.

Armed police had descended on the park after a person reportedly "made a number of concerning comments". The park and a number of nearby businesses were evacuated. Streets surrounding the park were also cordoned off. Public transport in the area was affected.

Auckland City Central Area Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff thanked the public for their patience. He said the evacuations occurred and cordons were put in place "so we could ensure the safety of all".
