Phil Hanson's son Aaron was seriously hurt when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on Muriwai Beach in 2020.

He was in a coma for five weeks and the family didn't know if he'd pull through or not.

Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Hanson said the fatal accident at Muriwai over the weekend is another warning sign.

"I think part of the problem for me is that it's not a purpose built area so it is a mixture of people who might access the beach to walk their dogs or swim, and then you may have vehicles going up and down.

"It's just really difficult to control what's going on and I understand people have a want to have adventure and have fun and that's completely understandable, but when you face something like this you ask yourself if it's worth the price."

Asked if it's time for a blanket ban, Hanson said: "There's been way too many accidents to warrant the risk of keeping Muriwai open for vehicle access.

"Again, I understand there are people that want to have adventure and I wonder is there a way for them to be able to do that without having to use Muriwai Beach as an access point.

"I think it was 2015 that four teenagers were killed there and now this latest incident, and our son who very nearly lost his life so it just seems to me there's too much of this going on.

In a statement to 1News yesterday, Auckland Council said vehicle access to the beach would be closed from midday Monday through to midday Thursday, with the Coast Road and Wilson Road beach access points locked.

The beach still remains open to visitors on foot.

Auckland Council General Manager, Parks and Community Facilities Taryn Crewe said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at Muriwai Beach yesterday.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of the person who died, as well as the two people injured.

“In partnership with Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara, Auckland Council is supporting the implementation of a rāhui in respect of this loss."

He added: “We have worked hard over the years to introduce measures at Muriwai Beach that aim to enhance safety and protect this fragile environment."
