The president of the Philippines is facing criticism after using a presidential helicopter to attend a Coldplay concert last week.

The British band performed last week at the Philippine Arena, 22km north of the capital, Manila.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr and his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos were spotted arriving at the venue on Friday.

Presidential Security Group (PSG) commander Jesus Nelson Morales said in a statement that "an unprecedented influx of 40,000 individuals eagerly attending a concert" resulted in traffic complications along the route.

"Recognising that this traffic situation posed a potential threat to the security of our president, the PSG took decisive action by opting for the presidential chopper."

Morales said he hoped the public would understand their decision.

"Your continued understanding and support for these measures are crucial in maintaining the safety and well-being of our nation's leadership."

Videos and photos posted to social media drew ire from users.

"Using official resources, like the presidential chopper, for personal and non-official activities is generally considered an abuse of power or misuse of government resources," Facebook user James Patrick Aristorenas said in a post on Saturday.

"We paid for the use of the chopper, fuel and security, who knows even for the tickets for everyone," Facebook user Arvine Concepcion said.

Coldplay played two shows at the Philippine Arena, the world's largest indoor arena, on January 19 and 20 as part of the Southeast Asia leg of their Music of the Spheres world tour.
