A 43-year-old seaman was arrested last week after he allegedly attempted to smuggle 13kg of cocaine through the Port of Tauranga.

The man appeared in the Tauranga District Court on January 18 charged with importation and possession for supply of a Class A controlled drug.

Customs maritime manager Robert Smith said that the seizure and arrest is the result of collaborative efforts between Customs, police, and the Port of Tauranga, demonstrating the value of strong partnerships to keep our borders safe.

Customs is unable to provide further details as the matter is before the courts.
