1 MetService issues heat alerts for 18 cities and towns, but respite on the way

It's been a sizzler few days for many Kiwis, but respite could soon be on the way. A cold southwesterly change is approaching the country from the south, according to MetService, after 18 heat alerts were issued today.

Yesterday, Auckland notched up its hottest day in four years, whilst heavy rain lashed parts of the West Coast and East Cape overnight.

There's good news on the way for farmers and growers on the east coast of the South Island with rain forecast for parts of the region later this week.

2 Tama Potaka: Hui 'constructive', National won't support 'unhelpful referendum'

Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says Saturday's national hui at Tūrangawaewae Marae was positive and constructive, showing deep concern among Māori over the direction of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Meanwhile, NZ First deputy leader Shane Jones has hit out at the content of a leaked document from the Justice Ministry - that was critical of the proposed Treaty Principles Bill - suggesting it's a "manifesto" of "phobia".

The proposed bill was a major talking point during the hui, which Jones previously described as a "moan fest".
