January 20, 2024
Thousands of calls were made to Geonet after the strong shake was felt on the North and South islands.

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has struck at a shallow depth southwest of Wellington this afternoon.

The quake struck 35km southwest of Wellington at a depth of 5km, with Geonet describing the shaking as "light".

It may have been felt as far north as Whanganui and as far south as Seddon.

Over 8500 people reported to have felt the quake, according to GeoNet.

One caller to 1News described it as "a pretty big shake".

Geonet pointed out it is the 10th anniversary of an earthquake that occurred 15km east of Eketāhuna, under the south-east of the North Island. The 2014 quake was felt strongly in both islands, with multiple reports of damage.
