A newborn baby was found in a shopping bag on a London street amid sub-zero temperatures in the English capital.
Metropolitan police were called on Thursday evening (local time) by a dogwalker in the eastern suburb of Newham who heard a cry from inside a shopping bag.
The baby girl, less than an hour old, was discovered wrapped in a towel at the junction of Greenway and High St South.
Members of the public kept the baby warm until paramedics arrived at the scene.
Chief superintendent Simon Crick said that he was “delighted” to report the baby was not injured and is safe and well in the care of hospital staff, who have named her Elsa.
“Our thoughts now turn to the baby mother; we are extremely concerned for her welfare as she will have been through a traumatic ordeal and will be in need of immediate medical attention following the birth.”
"If you are the baby’s mother, please know that your daughter is well, no matter what your circumstances please do seek help by dialling 999.”
London recorded a low of -1° overnight on Thursday, when the baby was discovered.
